League Finals Round Up
Intermediate League Final
Brian Borus 2-12
Holycross Ballycahill 1-08
Brian Borus upward spiral continued on Saturday evening as they recorded an impressive 2-12 to 1-08 victory over Holycross Ballycahill to claim the Intermediate League title. Last year they completed the Junior A league and championship double and, on this evidence, they look set to be contenders once again in this year’s Intermediate Championship, albeit Saturdays victory was against an understrength Holycross Ballycahill side.
Goals from Alanna English and Shona Lang proved crucial to the Brian Borus success, but it was an outstanding all-round team performance that laid the foundation for victory.
Brian Borus started brilliantly, racing into a five-point lead before Holycross Ballycahill eventually opened their account after 18 minutes. Holycross settled into the contest as the half progressed, with Steph Dwan, Robyn Fitzgerald and Anna Gavin all finding the target to leave the halftime score at 0-07 to 0-05 in favour of Brian Borus.
Holycross Ballycahill registered the opening score of the second half but then endured a barren spell of 12 minutes without a score as Brian Borus hit devastating form, firing over 1-04 without reply. Holycross responded well with a goal of their own and both sides traded points before a second Brian Borus goal, finished brilliantly by Shona Lang with a one-handed flick, pushed the margin out to seven points with just two minutes of normal time remaining.
The midfield battle was a hugely competitive affair throughout the hour, with Helena Walsh and Anna French going toe-to-toe with Claire Stakelum and Robyn Fitzgerald. However, the standout performer on the evening was Brian Borus centre-back Alison O’Mahony, who delivered a commanding display at the heart of the defence.
Junior A League Final
Kiladangan 1-13
Gortnahoe Glengoole 1-07
Last years beaten league and championship finalists Kiladangan were crowned champions on Friday evening as they secured a 1-13 to 1-07 win over Gortnahoe Glengoogle in the Junior A League final played in the Tipperary County Camogie Grounds. Kiladangan led 8 points to 1-02 at half time and enjoyed a 6 point lead at full-time. Sinead Meagher was superb from frees scoring 9 points in total while Sadhbh Fogarty, and Emma Gavin also raised white flags with Laoise Ryan getting their only goal. For Gortnahoe Glengoole Sophie Pembroke led the scoring with Niamh Gleeson and Grace Campion also on target.
Junior B League Final
Clonoulty Rossmore 4-08
Roscrea 2-10
Clonoulty Rossmore claimed the Junior B League title after a hard-fought and entertaining 4-08 to 2-10 victory over Roscrea in glorious conditions in Gortnahoe last Friday evening. Clonoulty made the brighter start, with Clodagh Ryan, Sophie Maher and Therese White helping them into an early lead. Roscrea gradually settled into the contest through the efforts of Caoimhe Flannery and Laura Hogan, but goals from Andrea Quirke and Therese White gave the West Tipp side a commanding 2-05 to 0-04 advantage at the break.
Roscrea stormed back into the game after half-time, with Laura Hogan inspiring the revival. Goals from Caoimhe Flannery and Ciara Crofton turned the game around and pushed Roscrea into the lead as Clonoulty struggled to find their rhythm. However, Clonoulty responded strongly, with Therese White and Andrea Quirke helping them regain momentum before Quirke struck for her second goal of the evening to restore their advantage.
Roscrea continued to battle to the finish, with Laura Hogan and Orla Carey adding important scores, but Clonoulty’s attacking power proved decisive. Clodagh Ryan reacted quickest to finish to the net for Clonoulty’s fourth goal before adding a fine late point to seal victory. Despite Roscrea’s late efforts, Clonoulty Rossmore held firm to secure a deserved four-point win and capture the Junior B League crown.
Junior C League Final
Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams 4-06
Kiladangan 1-04
Kiladangan Camogie Club were unable to overcome a strong display from Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams on Sunday morning, as the Kickhams claimed the Junior C League title on a final scoreline of 4-6 to 1-4.
Knockavilla Donaskeigh laid the foundations for victory in the opening half and went to the break with a commanding 1-4 to 0-1 advantage. Ruby Kelly struck a crucial first-half goal, while both Kelly and Jessie Collins also contributed points on the scoreboard. Kiladangan’s only score of the half came courtesy of Emma Mulqueen.
Despite enjoying plenty of possession and producing some promising passages of play, Kiladangan found it difficult to break down a resolute Knockavilla Donaskeigh defence, with Áine Leahy excelling at centre-back and Anna Butler on top in the middle of the field.
Kiladangan started the second half brightly and reduced the deficit through two Paula Kelly frees before Lily Brennan added a goal and a point to give her side renewed hope. However, Knockavilla Donaskeigh responded impressively, with Ruby Kelly once again proving a constant threat to the Kiladangan defence as she landed an excellent score.
Mary Ann Hayes also added two points for the winners, while Ruby Kelly completed a superb hat-trick of goals to put the result beyond doubt as the Kickhams ran out deserving champions on a final scoreline of 4-6 to 1-4.
