Tipperary Jubilee Team to be Honoured in Croke Park
In 1999 Tipperary won their first ever senior All-Ireland title beating Kilkenny in the first 15-a-side-final in Croke Park by a single point 12 points to 1-08. There was a huge outpouring of relief and joy at the final whistle as the county finally captured their first title having lost 7 previous deciders down through the years. A record attendance at the time of over 15,000 witnessed a close and exciting encounter between 2 great teams. After the game Cashel’s Meadbh Stokes had the honour of climbing the steps of the Hogan Stand to lift the O’Duffy Cup, a fitting honour for an inspirational leader and player. Who will ever forget Drom-Inch’s Catriona Hennessy coming off the bench that day to point the winning free or Deirdre Hughes’s player of the match performance or Noelle Kennedy’s 6 crucial points from frees? So many people played a huge part to Tipperary’s success that year, non other than their manager the late great Biddy Philips. Biddy was the driving force behind Tipperary camogie giving years of dedication and commitment to camogie in the county. Alongside her the great Jim Madden who sadly has also passed since and Timmy Moloney of Cashel were instrumental to the team’s success bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to their role as selectors. 1999 proved to be a rollercoaster of a year for the senior side having suffered a huge defeat in the league final against Cork earlier in the summer. After that Biddy brought Michael Cleary, Colm Bonnar and Sean Hennessy into the set up and their coaching and experience helped to elevate the team to new heights. Not content with 1 All-Ireland the team would go on to capture the All-Ireland title again in 2000 before completing a dream 3-in-a-row in 2001. Magical times and unbelievable memories of one of the greatest camogie teams.
This Sunday as we look forward to the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland Junior Final Tipperary Camogie’s winning 1999, 2000 and 2001 teams will be honoured with a lunch and presentation on the day while the 1999 team on the 25th Anniversary of their All-Ireland victory will be honoured at half time of the senior final.
