Tipperary begin their defence of their Munster crown tomorrow Saturday when they take on Waterford in the Munster semi-final in Golden GAA @ 12 noon. Waterford enjoyed a 12 points to 6 win over Limerick last Sunday in the preliminary round while Cork had an impressive 1-17 to 1-09 win over Clare in their semi-final clash. The winners on Saturday in Mallow will play Cork in the Munster final in FBD Semple Stadium on the 19th of May as part of a double header with the Munster Senior game between Tipp and Cork.

It has been a number of weeks since Tipperary won the National League a first league title in 20 years. The character shown that day to come from behind after a slow start and then hold off a strong Galway finish will certainly stand to Denis Kelly’s charges and will bring them a renewed confidence for the season ahead. Karen Kennedy was the star in the league final picking up player of the match after her contribution of 1-03 from play. Waterford will be well aware of her threat now in attack and will look to set up to curb her influence. Beth Carton continues to be Waterford’s key attacker and she scored 7 (6 frees) of their 12 points in their win over Limerick. Niamh Rocket had 3 points from play while All-Star midfielder Lorraine Bray finished with 2 points. Keeper Brianna O’Regan also had a big influence on the game pulling off a number of crucial saves including a penalty. This year Waterford are managed by former Cork minor manager Gerry Wallace. They won’t fear playing Tipp having beaten them on the last 2 occasions, the opening round of the league and last year’s All-Ireland semi-final.

Despite the lost to Waterford in their opening game of the league Tipperary are on a winning streak at present with 5 wins in succession. Denis Kelly will be hoping to keep this going tomorrow  when whilst also looking at getting more game time into some of his panel. In the league final all of the subs made an impact when introduced especially Julieanne Bourke and Clodagh Quirke so competition for places should be strong. Eimear McGrath finished the league as overall top scorer and will be hoping she can bring her scoring form into the Munster campaign.  A huge prize of a place in the Munster final in 2 weeks time is up for grabs.
