Paddy Duffy Cancer Recovery Camogie Challenge Game

Tipperary 2-14

Cork 1-14

Well done to all in Borris-ileigh GAA and Camogie Club who organised a fantastic senior challenge match last Friday night between the All-Ireland champions Cork and Tipperary.  A great crowd came out to watch the game with the visitors quickest to settle with some early well taken scores from Sorcha McCarten and Katrina Mackey. Tipp were then awarded a penalty but Eimear Heffernan’s strikle was well saved by Amy Lee in the Cork goals. Tipp needed a score to settle and that score game in the 10th minute when Clodagh McIntyre collected a pass took on the ball and fired her shot low passed Lee. This ignited the Tipp performance and with Caoimhe Maher excellent at centre back and Rosin Howard and Clodagh McIntyre causing trouble up front they began winning frees which Eimear Heffernan brilliantly executed to give the homeside a 1-07 to 6 point lead at half time. Tipp started the second half well with Eimear McGrath on target from frees. By the 38 minute they had stretched their lead to 8 points (1-12 to 0-07) but Cork weren’t going to lie down and came storming right back into the game with 6 points in succession. Hannah Looney, Emma Murphy, Orlaith Mullins and Ali Smith all getting on the scoreboard. Both teams had at this stage made a number of substitutions and it was two of Tipp’s subs who made key contributions. Shannon Rovers’s Celine Guinan split the posts with her first shot on goals while Caoimhe Perdue with her first touch had goal on her mind when she headed for goal and ensured victory for Tipp with her side’s second green flag. Cork responded a minute later with a goal of their own from Katriona Mackey to leave the final score 2-14 to 1-14.

The match was part of a weekend of events ran by the local community to raise money for the Paddy Duffy fundraiser. Young Paddy Duffy is currently undergoing cancer treatment in Manchester. His family is steeped in GAA and Camogie. To learn more about Paddy’s story and to donate, search Paddy Duffy Cancer Recovery GoFundMe online.
