FBD Insurance Junior A Final

Brian Borus             0-09

St. Rita’s Fethard   2-01

In dreadful weather conditions on Sunday Brian Borus booked their place in this Sunday’s FBD Insurance Junior A final against Moneygall after a deserving 2 point victory over St R

ita’s Fethard. In a low scoring affair Brian Borus with the aid of the wind led 2 points to no score after 10 minutes. With driving wind and rain credit must go to both sets of players who worked tirelessly against the elements in a bid to succeed. Brian Borus spent most of the opening 30 minutes camped in St Rita’s half but struggled to get the scores on the board until Rebecca Burke and Aishling Ryan began converting their chances and by the 20th minute they had built up a 5 point to no score lead. A minute later though a strike from long distance by Lucy Spillane sailed all the way under the crossbar to give St Rita’s a badly needed opening score and suddenly the deficit was reduced back to just 2 points. Both sides battled hard till the break but the score remained 5 points to a goal. Brian Borus would have been disappointed not to have being further ahead having enjoyed the majority of possession and this was compounded even more when Katie Ryan having already pointed an early free goaled 2 minutes into the second half. A lovely pass by Emily Spillane picked out Katie all alone on the edge of the square and she turned and fired a shot to the back of the net to the delight of the St Rita’s support. St Rita’s were never let build on from here as Brian Borus led by their joint captains Eimear Myles and Helena Walsh seemed to find another gear and started attacking at the Fethard defence with real purpose. Points from Aishling Ryan brought the sides level 2-1 to 7 before a pointed free from Mary Barrett put Brian Borus into the lead on the 48th minute. Fethard tried repeatly to get another score with Nell Spillane and Dee Twomey amongst others to impress. The Brian Borus defence was excellent in the second half especially Shauna Maher and Alison O’Mahony while Helena Walsh put in a huge shift in midfield denying St Rita’s any chance of another score. Two more points from Brian Borus before the full-time whistle after a very difficult day for camogie meant they qualified for Sundays county final on a final scoreline of 9 points to 2-01.
