U14 County Finals

A bumper weekend of U14 county finals took place at the weekend with 7 finals in total up for decision. Fantastic games took place with brilliant skill, sportsmanship and scores throughout the 3 days. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t play its part with majority of the games played in very tough wet and windy weather. This didn’t dampen the players or supporters spirits and the large crowds in attendance for every game were treated to great entertainment.

U14 B County Final

Slieve Felim 5-04

Cahir 1-01

A blistering opening 5 minutes by Slieve Felim with 2-01 on the scoreboard before Cahir even got a chance to settle set the foundation for their wonderful victory in the U 14 B county final on Friday night. A huge crowd turned out to watch two sides who had drawn earlier in the group stages go head to head. A point from Anna Carr was followed by another wonder goal from full-forward Alice Butler on the 17th minute and Cahir were in real trouble. Slieve Felim were on top all over the field with fantastic performances from Michelle Lee, Emma Corbett and Brid Woodlock putting Cahir under relentless pressure and struggling to get to grips with the Slieve Felim attack. A goal each from the midfield pairing of Zara Cosgrove and Jessie Shanahan extended their lead while a converted  free from Molly Carr left the half time score 5-04 to 0-00 in Slieve Felim’s favour. Amazingly that was to be their final score of the match as Cahir came out fighting in the second half and put in a performance from 1-15 that the players and management could be proud of.  A free after the restart from Aoife Quirke gave them a badly needed score but despite enjoying lots of second half possession and producing some great camogie they were unable to add to their score until late in the game when Lily Casey found the back of the net. Despite being under more pressure in the second half the Slieve Felim defence stood strong with Anna Kennedy and Mairead O’Donoghue to the fore. Cahir never gave up working for the whole game showing great heart and determination. Jessica Davis and Heather Kiely made some great runs down the wings but a stronger more physical Slieve Felim side were able to counteract this and they ran out deserving winners on a final score of 5-04 to 1-01.

Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams   2-04

Eire Og Annacarty   2-03

On Saturday morning Knockavilla and Annacarty played out a highly entertaining contest in the u 14 B shield final. The neighbouring clubs always serve up classics when they meet and Satuday’s final proved no different. At half time Kickhams led 1-02 to 2 points having played with the advantage of the wind. Annacarty’s 2 points coming from Rachel Heffernan. After the 40 minutes of action Kickhams were leading by a goal 2-03 to 1-03.  Playing with the aid of a strong breeze Annacarty were beginning to get on top and a goal in the 41st minute from Chloe o’Neill made it all square 2-03 apiece. Annacarty then went in search of a winner but some ferocious  defending by Sophie O’Dwyer and Ciara Breen Keane kept the scores out. And then in the 49th minute captain Aine Leahy stepped up and fired the winning point over the crossbar. A terrific point into the wind. It was heart breaking for Annacarty to loose at the death by a single point while there were great scenes of joy for Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams at the final whistle.

U14 C County Final

Gortnahoe Glengoole 0-05

St Patrick’s                   0-04

St Patricks and Gortnahoe Glengoole played out a highly entertaining game between two evenly matched teams on Saturday afternoon in the U14 C County Final. St Pats began the game with the aid of the very strong wind in the first half, which proved to be a significant factor throughout the game for both teams. Exchanges were fast and physical as both teams tried to impose themselves on the game. In a game where scores would be difficult to come by, mainly due to the swirling wind, St Pats converted the first score with a point from play from Milly Cleere. St Pats efforts were rewarded as they added two more points from frees, taken confidently by Kate Fox. Taylor Corbett managed to get Gortnahoe on the score board from a free but both teams went in after the first half with a low score line of St Pat's 3 points to Gortnahoe’s 1 point.  Gortnahoe got the first score shortly after the resumption with a point from Taylor Corbett. St Pats then scored a point from a free to make it a 2 point game. They could have been further ahead only for some great play by Meabh Leahy in the Gortnahoe goals. With the advantage of the wind Gortnahoe hunted in packs managing to claw back the lead point by point, courtesy of 2 points again from the excellent Taylor Corbett, one from a free and one from a strike from mid field. With the sides level 4 points a piece the game was in the melting pot.

Gortnahoe were awarded a free on their 30 yard line and Eimear Ryan stepped up to the ball. The resulting free dropped just short but with the help of Abbie Davy, Mary Kate Ely saved it from the end line and cleverly passed it to her team mate Aoife Gleeson who popped it over the bar giving Gortnahoe the lead for the first time in the match. Both teams worked so hard for the last few minutes of injury time but St Patrick’s couldn’t manage to find the all important equaliser and  it was Gortnahoe who were celebrating at the final whistle coming out on top by a single point 0-05 to 0-04.  The cup was lifted by joint captains Aoife Gleeson and Mary Kate Ely to the tremendous applause of their supporters.

Ballingarry 2-04

Thurles Sarsfields 1-06

There was huge excitement in the County Camogie Grounds on Sunday afternoon as Ballingarry and Thurles Sarsfields played out a highly exciting game of camogie that went right down to the wire. Thurles Sarsfields started very strong in the first half with the aid of the wind. Aoibhe Purcell and Keeva Nolan were strong in defence, while sharp shooter Sadhbh Murray kept the score board ticking over until the half time whistle blew going in 1.04 to 0.01. The Ballingarry girls came out fighting in the second half and began to eat up the Sars lead. Emily Ivors was always a threat going forward and it was her goal and a point that made it a one point game as the 40th minute approached with Thurles still in front 1-04 to 1-03. Moments later Emily Cahill found the back of the net to swing the momentum in Ballingarry’s favour and give them a 2 point lead.  Sars girls weathered the storm and brought the match back level deep within added time with free’s from Sadhbh Murray after excellent hooking, blocking and attacking from both Kaelinn Rossiter and Ava Geoghan. There was still time for more drama and Ballingarry went on one final attack resulting in Emily Ivers firing over the winning point to great scenes of delight from the Ballingarry supporters. It was a a very strong performance by Cashel all over the field with 3 goals from Niamh Manton and one from Emma Bonnar giving Cashel a half-time lead of 4-03 to 0-03. Lorrha fought hard but huge defensive work by Cashel's backline and goalie denied them a comeback. U14 A Shield Final

Kilruane MacDonagh’s  4-08

Ballybacon Grange         1-01

At 7.30pm on Sunday evening the meeting of Kilruane MacDonagh’s and Ballybacon Grange took place in the U14 A Shield final. These sides have had great close battles on many occasions but on Sunday it was Kilruane who held the upperhand throughout and secured victory on a scoreline of 4-08 to 1-01. It was the perfect performance from Kilruane MacDonagh’s  with standout performers all over the field. None more so than captain Clodagh Shinners who took the game to Ballybacon Grange from the offset. With 19 minutes gone in the opening half Kilruane led 4 points to no score with Clodagh scoring all 4 points, 3 45ms and a point from play. The Ballybacon response was very good though and with Sinead Lonergan excellent at centre back and Aoibhin Maher working hard in midfield they reduced the deficit to 3 points thanks to a pointed 45m by Aoibhin Maher on the 21st minute. Great play by Eibhlis Hannon and Sarah Williams meant Kilruane had the ball worked back up the field 2 minutes later where Orla Heffernan was on hand to score a goal. With 25 minutes on the clock it was the turn of Ballybacon to raise a green flag thanks to great play by Aoibhin Maher . Clodagh Shinners then stepped up  to nail a free to leave the half time score 1-05 to 1-01.

The second half was another tough physical battle but unfortunately for Ballycacon the scores just came easier for Kilruane. A switch into full forward brought Mioda O’Shea more and more into the game and her pace and skill produced a goal shortly after the restart followed by a point on the 34th minute to push Kilruane further ahead. Kilruane registered two more goals before the end thanks to a Clodagh Shinners penalty and a late goal from Grace Cleary. Evie O’Meara was a constant threat up front for them while Sophie O’Meara was ever reliable in defence.  It wasn’t to be for Ballybacon who were short a number of players on the night due to injury. They never gave up to the final whistle and Kilruane were made earn every score. In defence Zara O’Mahony, Lucy Butler and Sinead Lonergan stood out while Aoibhin Maher and Alice Purcell also played very well.
