U 16 County Finals 2022
Last week saw a jam packed week of U16 county finals taking place with 6 finals in total up for decision. Every evening large crowds gathered to support their team and each evening there was lots of excellent camogie and exciting games to witness.
U16 A Final
Moycarkey-Borris 2-10
Eire Og Annacarty 2-06
Thursday’s U16 A final was a very high standard game of camogie from the two excellent teams. Annacarty got off to a brilliant start with a goal from the opening attack within the first minute by Lucy Heffernan. They quickly added two points to establish an early lead 1-02 to a point after 10 minutes. Moycarkey soon settled and found their rhythm outscoring Annacarty from here until half time by 7 points to 1. Ciara Shelly who had a great game at centre forward was chief scorer along with Sarah Corcoran from frees. Led by Danielle Ryan and Lucy Heffernan in midfield and Ciara O’Hora in attack Annacarty went in search of further scores but found the Moycarkey Borris defence difficult to break down with Caoimhe Cantwell excellent at full back. At half time Moycarkey Borris held a 2 point lead 8 points to 1-03. The Annacarty girls came out strong in the second half and produced some lovely passages of play and fine scores from Ciara O’Hora and Lucy Heffernan. But Ciara Shelly was a constant thorn in their side at the opposite end of the field and she buried a great goal to the delight of their following. Against the wind Kate Dowling acted as a sweeper for Moycarkey to great effect winning lots of possession and covering every corner of the field. The game was really in the melting pot and only 2 points separated the sides with Moycarkey leading 1-08 to 1-06 when Moycarkey Borris struck for 1-1 in quick succession. Jane Corcoran with the goal and Ciara Shelly with her 4th point from play, this was a real sucker punch for Annacarty who had begun to get on top in many areas of the field. This made it 2-09 to 1-06 and suddenly Moycarkey Borris were enjoying a 6 point lead with the clock ticking down. Great credit to Annacarty they continued to go on the attack and Ciara O’Hora who had a fine game throughout hit the back of the net to leave the final score 2-10 to 2-06.

Doireann Ryan goaled to extend Boherlahan’s lead and at half time the score read 1-10 to 1-00. The Brian Borus goal came from a well executed penalty by Isobelle O’Donnell. Boherlahan Dualla were on a high and started the 2nd half with gusto. They found the back of the net 4 more times thanks to Lauren Flynn, Amy Moloughney, Abbie Horgan and Doireann Ryan. U16 A Plate Final
Borris-Ileigh 4-10
Cashel King Cormacs 0-08
The County Camogie Grounds played host to the County U16 A Plate Final on Friday evening between Cashel King Cormac and Borris-Ileigh. Exchanges were hard, physical and fast as both teams were battling for early supremacy. With four minutes on the clock, an excellent passage of play led to the opening score. Borris-Ileigh’s Ella Ryan worked tigerishly to win possession and offloaded with a "brick flick" to Therese Groome who in turn found Alesha Fanning thundering down the central channel and once she received the pass, she gave the goalkeeper no chance with a pile-driver to the net. A minute later, Emma Maher pointed a free to etch out an early four point lead. Cashel's attacking ability was dangerous as they used their speed to open up channels and offload to runners off the shoulder and the efforts were rewarded with two points in the 7th and 9th minutes from Hannah Butler (free) and Eimear Dwan (point).
Gabrielle Hodgins was doing trojan work out in the wing for Borris and after winning a ball, she was fouled and Ava Bevans floated a brilliantly struck ball between the posts to push the lead back out to three points.
Cashel tacked on another point before Borris-Ileigh raised the second green flag of the night following another impressive passage of play. Ava Bevans had moved to the inside forward line and the dividends were soon reaped when Emma Maher picked her out with a perfect pass and Ava had only one thing on her mind. Cashel refused to surrender however and their efforts were rewarded with two more points, both from deadballs.
With 23 minutes on the clock, we witnessed the score of the game. Aisling Boyle delivered a text book pass in towards the goalmouth area which Ava Bevans plucked from the air without breaking stride and dispatched to the net in superb fashion, a score worth the entrance fee alone. While Emma Bonnar gave an excellent display in defence for Cashel in the opening half it wasn’t enough and they found themselves trailing at the break 3-03 to 5 points, Emma Maher slotting over a free for the final score of the half.
Cashel started the second half the better team with Hannah Butler scoring an early point to get Cashel back on track and Tara Quinn also grabbing a point. Despite Cashel having the majority of the play in the 3rd quarter, Bevans still managed to tuck away her third goal followed swiftly by a superb point by Aisling Boyle. Another Eimear Dwan and Hannah Butler point added to the Cashel score line shortly before Emma Maher tallied up her 5th point of the game giving an excellent display in the Borris forward line. Cashel went in search of goals but the Borris-Ileigh inside line of defence stood solid with Tara Kennedy a rock at full back where she was flanked by the hard working Tara Fitzgerald and Aoife Ryan. Emma tacked on another two points while Ava clipped over one more before the referee brought proceedings to a halt resulting in an impressive 4-10 to 0-08 victory for the girls in maroon. The effort of the Cashel girls could not be faulted as every girl on the field tried their very best to get a victory. Emma Bonnar and Orla Ryan were Cashel’s most influential backs while Up front Hannah Butler and Tara Quinn kept the score line ticking over. Ava Gillespie and Emer Dwan also putting in a massive shift in the engine room. Portroe 2-07
On Monday evening Gortnahoe Glengoole and Portroe had a great battle in the U16 C Plate final with victory going to Gortnahoe winning by 4 points 2-11 to 2-07. Only her second game back after recovering from an injury Ciara Gleeson started in goals for Gortnahoe in the opening half making some vital saves and also coming out to nail a 45m. Her move out the field for the second half proved crucial though as she stopped Portroe from dominating in midfield and also scored 2 points from play along with 5 pointed frees. Gortnahoe got off to a great start with a goal after 4 minutes from Aoife Gleeson. They needed this goal as Portroe soon got on top and with Caitriona Finn in excellent form the scores started to come. A Caitriona Finn goal along with points from Grace Kirby and Lauren Quin put the north Tipp side ahead. Just before the half time whistle Aoife Gleesnon kicked the ball to the back of the net for her second goal to reduce Portroe’s lead to a single point 1-05 to 2-01. The second half was a lively affair and in the 26th minute Caitriona Finn raised a second green flag to extend Portroe’s lead. But with Ciara Gleeson now outfield Gortnahoe began to enjoy more and more possession and Mary Kate Ely scored the first of her two points from play. On the 44th minute Amy Reddan scored an excellent point for Gortnahoe after a pass from Mary Kate Ely. For Portroe Ella Mulrooney and Grace Mulrooney were very good while Sophia Madden always looked dangerous in possession. However Gortnahoe continued to drive at the Portroe defence and won a number of frees with Ciara Gleeson made no mistake in converting.
