Senior League Final

Eire Og Annacarty 0-18

Drom-Inch 2-12

18 points will win most games but on Sunday morning it wasn’t enough for Annacarty in a highly entertaining senior league final. These sides are becoming well use to serving up very competitive games and Sunday’s encounter was no different as the lead changed hands on a number of occasions. Annacarty on blance looked to be the better of the two teams and won the duels in the vital ‘middle third’ area of the field with Orlagh Walsh, Orla O’Brien and Eibhlis McDonald to the fore. However Drom’s ability to score two goals at crucial times was key to the final result. In fact the county champions looked to be heading for victory with a two point lead heading down the home straight. But 2 well executed frees by the ever-reliable Siobhan O’Neill levelled proceedings on the 58th minute. Miriam Campion, Drom-Inch’s most dangerous forward throughout the hour won a free on the 58th minute and Niamh Ryan duly slotted the ball over the bar to put the ‘green and red’ ahead. There was still time for more scores though and Annacarty once again went on the hunt for an equaliser. A late Siobhan O’Neill pointed free ensured the sides couldn’t be separated and a replay will be needed next Sunday to determine which team will be crowned league champions for 2022.

Drom-Inch enjoyed a good opening spell and quickly had the scoreboard ticking over with some great points from Anne Evistion, Miriam Campion and Patricia McGrath. McGrath’s over the shoulder score the pick of the bunch. Annacarty soon settled and their pace and movement going forward began to pay dividend with points from Eibhlis McDonald and Orla O’Brien who was excellent throughout.  Annacarty started to dominate and Drom-Inch looked to be in real trouble before Miriam Campion grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with two superb points from way out on the wing. This gave Drom a lift and a good move started by Niamh Ryan resulted in Patricia McGrath firing home the opening goal of the game to give Drom-Inch a slender one point lead at half time, 1-08 to 10.

Annacarty had the advantage of the wind in the second half and with Orla O’Brien, Shauna Heffenan and Ciara Slattery all growing more and more into the game they looked to have the measure of the county champions. But once again Drom-Inch showed their danger in attack with Anne Eviston firing home a goal on the 35th minute. The remaining of the half ebbed and flowed with both clubs enjoying purples spells at different times. The camogie was excellent with some fantastic point taking and few could argue that a draw wasn’t the fairest result while both sets of players will no doubt look forward to ‘going at it again’. The replay will take place this Sunday @ 6.30pm in the County Camogie Grounds.
