Intermediate League Final

Boherlahan Dualla  2-11

Newport Ballinahinch 0-15

Sean Treacys GAA, Kilcommon hosted the 2022 Intermediate League final on a sunny Saturday evening. Newport started tremendously with 4 unanswered points Boherlahan having real difficulty in dealing with Emma Flanagan and Keeley Lenihan’s long range point scoring.

Boherlahan pulled their way back into the game with points from play from Sarah Delaney and Emma Horgan and a pointed free from Emma Horgan. In fact Emma Horgan’s contribution from placed balls was very significant as later in the half a long range free went straight to the top corner of the Newport net. Newport continued to pick off points with the aid of the wind including points from Sarah Hennsey and Keeley Lenihan. The sides ended level at halftime on Boherlahan Dualla 1-06 Newport Ballinahinch 0-09. A super save by a brave Lauren Horgan stopped a certain Newport  goal just before halftime while at the opposite end Ellie Ryan soloed through and her shot on goal was deflected over the bar by the Newport keeper.

The second half saw the sides level on several occasions. Amy Quigley scored a massive free against the breeze with Aoife Kavanagh scoring a similar long range free for Boherlahan. The turning point came when Boherlahan’s Emma Horgan doubled on a dropping free into the back of the net giving the 2021 Junior A champions a four point lead. Newport fought back to a point difference 2-10 to 0-15 including a Keeley Lenihan effort that came off the crossbar and over the bar. An injury point free from Emma Horgan gave Boherlahan Dualla a historic first ever Intermediate trophy. Boherlahan’s youth and extra fitness was significant in the end but both sides can call on some extra county players for the championship in August. Newport found Boherlahan’s half back line difficult to penetrate in the 2nd half but this game could have gone either way. Seven teams will contest a very competitive Intermediate championship later in the summer.

Junior B Final

Moycarkey Borris  3-12

Cashel King Cormacs 0-02

A low scoring opening quarter saw Moycarkey Borris lead Cashel 3 points to 1 after 15 minutes. A goal 5 minutes later from Bernie Bergin kick started the Moycarkey and they dominated the remainder of the game running out comfortable winners. A second goal for the winners this time from Caitriona Walsh who was excellent throughout constantly moving and linking up the play helped Moycarkey to a 2-6 to 1 point lead. Cashel’s only score came from play from Ciara Moloney. It was a difficult second half for Cashel as Moycarkey showed why they are many peoples favourites for the Junior B championship. Emma O’Sullivan was on top in midfield popping up for 2 second half points from play. Moycarkey Borris have a very balanced team which included a great mixture of youth and experience. Maeve Corcoran led the defence at centre back 21 years after winning an All-Ireland Junior final for Tipperary back in 2001. Another standout performer was wing forward Alisha Kearney who topped off her display with a late goal. Moycarkey could have raised further green flags but for some good goal keeping by Evelyn Gayson-Molloy in the Cashel goals. The young Cashel could only manage one score in the second half a point from Ciara Moloney.

Junior B2 League Final

Eire Og Annacarty 0-14

Shannon Rovers 1-02

On Sunday evening in Drombane Annacarty proved too strong for Shannon Rovers running out 9 point winners to clinch the Junior B2 league title. Ciara Slattery and Shauna Heffernan were a constant threat in attack and were Annacarty’s leading scorers. In defence Orlagh Walsh and Mary O’Dwyer were excellent while the work rate of Sorcha and Sinead White was key to their success.

Senior League Final

Attention turns this Sunday to the meeting of Drom-Inch and Eire Og Annacarty in the Senior League Final @ 12 noon in the County Camogie Grounds. Both sides always serve up a physically tough and highly entertaining game when they meet and Sunday is expected to be no different. The sides already met in the group stages with Drom-Inch victorious in a high scoring game 6-08 to 5-09. In the semi-final Drom-Inch were comfortable winners over Nenagh while Annacarty defeated Silvermines 16 points to 1-08. Tipp minor midfielder Orla O’Brien has been very impressive to date while in attack Annacarty will be looking to Leah Heffernan and Siobhan O’Neill to get on the scoreboard. For Drom-Inch Mary Bourke and Miriam Campion have been clocking up the scores in the group stages while Niamh Shanahan and Eimear Cahill have impressed in defence.  A close contest is expected on Sunday.

‘ Mothers and Others Camogie Group in St Mary’s leading the way’

St Mary’s Camogie Club PRO Karen Ferris details the success of the ‘Mamogies’ in the club.

St. Mary’s Hurling and Camogie club has established a very successful Mothers & Others camogie group. A long established and successful club, St. Mary's of Clonmel reformed the camogie side of the club last year setting up the only camogie club in the urban town of Clonmel. It's initial focus was on building a sustainable base, starting with offering training to young new players from 6-10 years of age. One of the initiatives undertaken in the early weeks was to run a basic camogie skills course for mothers & others. This was led out by the camogie coaches; Michael O’Reilly, Donncha Fahey, Zoe Farrell and Mags Leahy, ensuring experienced hurling and camogie players were involved and supporting skills development from the off.

It has since taken on a life of its own and a four week programme to learn how to strike a sliotar and practice at home with the kids has now developed into a nearly thirty-five strong group who meet at the St. Mary’s sportfield each Friday night to practice drills and play some fairly competitive matches. Because of the way the group started out, it attracted a broad church including women who had never played hurling or any competitive sport before. The focus has all been about having fun, getting in a bit of exercise, the social interaction and and picking up some camogie skills along the way. Many of the younger players come along to the field each Friday, and it’s a community affair with the girls getting to puck around at the same time as cheering on the mams in the matches.

The Mothers & Others group, or ‘Mamogies’ as they are called in the club have got involved in a number of additional initiatives above and beyond the camogie including a mental health awareness month last November and a May Moves Challenge involving weekly Zumba classes and meet ups for weekly runs. They are also running a 4 week Beginners Course this month to get new members involved and ensure it stays as accessible to people at all levels.

It really took off at a time coming out of Covid where there was a great buzz around being able to meet up in person again and it has formed really strong social connections right across the club, and is now a set fixture on the St. Mary’s GAA calendar in Clonmel. There are no plans to field a team or undertake competitive matches with other clubs, but you never know. We’re only starting out and the skills are improving from week to week!
