April 21, 2022

This weekend is a big weekend for Tipperary Camogie with 4 teams in action in the Munster championship. On Saturday, both our minor and senior team are away to Limerick while on Sunday the U16 A side travel to take on Waterford while our Junior side welcome Clare to the County Camogie Grounds.

Munster Senior Championship

Tipperary VS Limerick Saturday April 23rd @ 5pm, TUS Gaelic Grounds

This year more than ever there is a real buzz surrounding the upcoming Munster championship due to cooperation of both Munster GAA and Munster Camogie to stage 4 double headers with the Munster Camogie matches being played before the Munster hurling games. The recent announcement of the double headers has brought an added importance and coverage to the 2022 provincial championship. On Saturday Tipperary will travel to the TUS Gaelic Grounds in Limerick to take on Limerick in a knockout Munster championship game played before the eagerly anticipated Waterford and Limerick senior hurling game @ 7pm. After 3 wins on a trot against Down, Offaly and Dublin in this year’s league Tipperary were defeated by Galway in their final group game meaning a place in a league final eluded them. With the All-Ireland championship getting underway at the end of May, the Munster championship will be seen as an excellent opportunity to get valuable games into the panel. Bill Mullaney will also be looking to settle on a championship team and win some much sought after silverware.

Managed by former Thurles Sarsfields hurler and Tipperary Camogie Manager John Lillis, Limerick had a difficult league campaign loosing to Kilkenny, Cork and Clare in the group stages. This meant a place in the relegation final and after a keenly contested game against Offaly they lost by 3 points 1-13 to 3-10. A huge amount of players got game time in the league with many players representing the senior team for the first time. This experience can only stand to them and as they gel as a group and grow in confidence they will no doubt improve. They will also have huge motivation on Saturday playing in front of a home crowd. With a place in the Munster semi-final on May 1st against Clare at stake both management teams will be hoping for a big performance and a victory. A win for either side will also be a big boost to their All-Ireland championship ambitions as they look to build momentum ahead of the summer. Tipperary have been without two of their half backline which started in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Galway with both Mairead Eviston and Karen Kennedy recovering from surgery. Neither player are likely to feature this weekend but if Tipperary were to progress further in the Munster championship the opportunity may arise to get valuable game time into them. Nicole Walsh has also yet to feature this year after earning a well deserved break while also getting married in recent weeks. Again, management may look at the Munster championship as a chance for competitive game time for the Borris-ileigh club player. Others who have featured in the league such as Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams Caoimhe McCarthy and St Cillian’s Claire Hogan have really impressed to date in attack and they will look to hold onto a starting jersey. Claire has made the step up from intermediate ranks with ease and her pace inside has complimented the Tipperary forward unit to date where Clodagh McIntyre and Casey Hennessey have also been getting on the scoreboard. Tipperary will go into Saturday’s game as firm favourites but know they can’t take a Limerick side with players of the calibre of Caoimhe Costelleo and Rebecca Delee for granted. The game throws in at 5 pm on Saturday and we look forward to a highly entertaining battle.

Munster Minor Championship

Tipperary Vs Limerick Saturday April 23rd @ 12pm, Fedamore GAA

Two weeks ago Tipperary loss to Cork in the opening round of the minor Munster championship after extra time. This put Cork straight through to the Munster final. In the other round 1 game Waterford defeated Clare meaning Clare played Limerick last weekend. Clare emerged winners in that contest 1-11 to 12. Like Tipperary Limerick will get a second opportunity to reach the semi-final. Both sides meet this Saturday with Cork once again waiting the winners. Tipperary met Limerick in the opening round of the All-Ireland series back in February with Tipperary enjoying a comfortable and convincing win. No doubt Limerick will have improved since then but having reached the All-Ireland semi-final where they loss by a single point to the eventual winners Cork Tipperay will be disappointed if they are unable to overcome the Limerick outfit on Saturday.

Munster Junior Championship

Tipperary Vs Clare Sunday April 24th @ 12pm, County Camogie Grounds

Having secured their division 2 status with a memorable win over Kildare 2 weeks ago in the relegation final focus now turns to the Munster championship for the Tipperary Junior panel and management. Captained by Boherlahan Dualla’s Clodagh Horgan this is a new look second Tipperary team with a new management and lots of new faces. The group had a tough league campaign with defeats to Kilkenny and Waterford and a good draw against Westmeath. They bounced back from defeat against Laois in the relegation semi-final to record a great win against Kildare and will go into Sunday’s game with an extra pep in their step. Goals were key to their success against Kildare with Sinead Meagher finding the net twice while also turning provider for Claire Stakelum’s goal. The management team look to have settled on a defence with Toomevara’s Mags Quigley at centre back with Nenagh’s Rachel Maher at number 3. Former Ireland’s fittest family winner and Thurles Sarsfields player Ciara Cummins has been very influential in midfield while up front Aoife McLoughney has impressed from play and frees. Clare had plenty of positives to take from their division 3 league campaign. In the opening game they suffered a narrow 3 point loss to Wexford before recording comprehensive victories over Down and Limerick. Like Tipperary they will look at the Munster championship as a real opportunity to win some valued silverware and great preparation for a Junior championship that they will hope to have a big say in. Tipperary will have home advantage on Sunday and will look forward to their first competitive game in the county grounds this year.

Munster U16 A semi-final

Tipperary vs Waterford Sunday April 24th @ 2pm, Waterford IT

Sunday’s Munster semi-final has been a long time coming around for John Ryan’s team having won their opening game against Clare 5 weeks ago. In the same week where many of the team had won All-Ireland schools finals with Presentation Thurles or the Ursuline Convent they proved to be too strong for a travelling Clare side winning on a scoreline of 3-10 to 4 points. Clare then had to take on Waterford who ran out huge winners on a scoreline of 9-11 to 1-12. Waterford had lost their opening two games to Cork and Limerick. The winning scoreline against Clare however would indicate that this Waterford team are a very good outfit with a serious eye for goals. Tipperary havd been preparing well for Sunday’s clash with lots of training sessions in the last 5 weeks while players will also have been playing U16 championship with their clubs. Waterford will have home advantage on while the extra games will also stand to them. A place in the Munster final is the prize for the winners on Sunday with Cork and Limerick contesting the other semi-final.
