Newport Ballinahinch 1-09

Kilruane MacDonaghs 0-04

Newport Ballinahinch were crowned FBD Insurance 2021 Minor C champions on Sunday after they recorded a 8 point win over Kilruane MacDonaghs in Puckane. Before the match a minutes silence took place for Mary Troy ,RIP , Childrens Officers for Newport Ballinahich who passed away last week. The Newport Players also wore black armbands in Mary’s memory. Both teams started the game well , with Kilruane getting the opening score from a Aine Spain free. Newport Ballinahinch soon levelled the game with a point from a free by Abbie Lenihan. The first 10 mins of game were tit for tat with both teams fighting gamely for each ball and tough challenges given and taken in equal measure. The next score of the game came from a puck out by Newport Goalie Emily Hurley ,which was caught superbly  by Aine Finn, who passed to  Clara Collins for a beautifully taken point. Clara followed this up with another well taken score. Kilruane replied with a second point from Aine Spain. Abbie Lenihan then pointed a free for Newport Ballinahinch after a foul on Slaine Goodwin. The turning point of the game came early in the 2nd half when  Sinead O Riordan showed great skill and pace to turn her marker and get a well taken point. Immediately after this puckout the ball was won by Newport Ballinahinch who fed the ball into Laura Parson who rattled the back of the Kilruane net. It was the perfect start to the second half for Newport Ballinahinch and really put them in the driving seat. This didn't stop the Kilruane girls from fighting hard till the bitter end with the mighty Mollie Kennedy dropping from midfield to help the sturdy Leanne Gould and Anna Mulcahy defend. While Aine Spain scored another point for Kilruane just before the last water break. Sarah Cleary who was outstanding from start to finished closed the scoring for Kilruane with a hard earned point from play.  Newport Ballinahinch were beginning to dominate in the second half with super tenacious play from  the 2 half backs Eimear Carey and Nadine Stokes , and the  midfield of Isobel Eivers, Clara Collins and Abbie Lenihan. A well taken point by Aine Finn who showed her strength  by   shrugging  off 2 defenders to score, followed by a great point by the skilful Abbie Lenihan extended Newport Ballinhinch’s lead. Sinead O Riordan scored another point from a placed ball following another pacey run and the final score for Newport was taken by Clara Collins who was dominant throughout. It was a great victory for Newport Ballinahinch where the Goalie Emily Hurley and the Full Back line of Aoife Mellerick and Robin Coffey were excellent throughout.  Kilruane MacDonagh’s to their credit never gave up and fought to the bitter end however it was Newport Ballinahinch’s day and Nadine Stokes who led by example throughout , accepted the cup on behalf of the team.

FBD Insurance Minor B Shield Final

Cahir 3-10

Drom-Inch 0-6

Cahir were crowned 2021 FBD Insurance Minor B shield winners on Sunday after a

dominant performance over Drom-Inch in Cahir on Sunday. The home side raced into an early lead with a well taken point from county minor player Niamh Costigan who was highly influential throughout the hour. Cahir were first to everyball and Drom-Inch when in possession were finding it difficult to get past the Cahir half backline. A Leah Flannery

free wasn’t dealt with and ended up in the back of the net for Cahir’s opening goal. There was more trouble for Drom-Inch when full-forward Niamh Costigan received a lovely pass from Eabha Moloney. Niamh rounded her marker and rattled the Drom-Inch net for Cahir’s second goal. Drom-Inch didn’t lie down and battled hard and with good work from Katie O’Dwyer and Erica Mullen they were awarded a free which Meabh Brennan pointed. The Cahir response was clinical with a point from Niamh Costigan. Both Leah Flannerya and Meabh Brennan pointed from frees to leave the half time score 2-4 to 2 points. A big performance was needed by Drom-Inch in the second half. They started well and began to grow more and more into the game with and Ruth Bourke and Caroline Shananhan battling hard and Katie O’Dwyer threatening in attack. Drom-Inch got the opening score of the second half but again Cahir responeded quickly with a Niamh Costigan point. Drom-Inch continued to work hard but found the Cahir defence difficult to break down and had to rely on scores from placed balls. Just before the water break Drom-Inch scored another point. This was cancelled out again by an excellent score, this time from Leah Flannery. Soon afters Niamh Costigan had Cahirs’s third goal after a pass from Aoibheann O’Donnell. Drom-Inch battle to the end but it was Cahir who ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 3-10 to 6 points. Joint captains Meabh Casey and Aoife Flynn accepted the shield on behalf of the team to the delight of the home crowd.

Historic 1st Munster A title for Cashel!

Cashel Community School 1-07

Coachford College 0-07

Cashel Community School secured their first title in over 30 years since Scoil Mhuire Presentation Convent era with a battling win over a strong fast-starting Coachford side. Coachford started well going into a 3 points to one lead but Cashel drew level by halftime at 3 points all as Lisa O’ Connor converted a free and scored from play along with an Anna Fahie point from play. Emma Horgan was dominant at midfield with the Cashel defence excelling also especially Anna Keane and Ella O’ Dwyer in the full back line. Lillie Fahie who was recovering from a finger injury was introduced as a sub to give Cashel a further boost.

A crucial penalty save by Molly Gilmartin spurred on both the Cashel players and their big support as Molly saved a well struck shot to her left.

Just after halftime, Grace Moloney got 2 vital scores, a goal and a point to put a cushion on the scoreboard. A free from Lisa o Connor meant that Cashel CC led at the second half waterbreak 1-06 to 0-3. Coachford came storming back in the final period with 4 points but with Aoibhe Gayson Molloy now in an effective sweeper role the goal they badly needed thankfully never materialised. Another converted Lisa O’connor free was Cashel’s 7th and final score and the coveted Munster Senior A trophy was finally theirs with the final score Cashel CC 1-07 Coachford 7points. The All Ireland Schools semi-final is fixed for Feb 5th currently, but Tipperary minors are due to play on Feb 6th v Limerick, so this clash will surely see the Camogie Association moving one of these games.

Pres. Thurles are Munster Junior B Champions!

Presentation Thurles 0-09 Colaiste Mhuire Ennis 0-07

This Munster Junior B (Under 16.5) Final was played in Littleton and began as a very low scoring affair which saw Ennis lead by 1 point at the 1st water break. Una Duggan, Sophie Maher and Caitlin Shelley were superb in defence keeping the Ennis score to the minimum. Four ‘Pres’ points, Kate Ralph (3) and a Ciara Shelley point gave Pres a halftime lead of 4 points to 1. Ennis opened the second half scoring before Kate Ralph scored again. Emer Dwan began to influence the game for Presenation from midfield and scored a super point just before the 2nd water break but with 5 Colaiste points also, the sides were level 6 points each with 15 minutes to go.

Two Kate Ralph frees and another point from play by Ciara Shelley  gave Thurles the lead they did not relinquish. Molly o Dwyer made some fine catches in goal and launched some long range frees out of defence. Sophie Lee made a crucial hook and the Clare side were only 2 down. Congratulations to Thurles and roll-on the semi-final.

 Munster Intermediate Club Final

Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams (Tipperary) V Gaultier (Waterford), Saturday 29th January  @1pm, Mallow

After a fantastic victory in the county final Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams will be hoping to be celebrating once again next Saturday afternoon when they meet Gaultier in the Intermediate Munster final. Gaultier who have dominated this competition in recent years will be aiming to win their 4th Munster title in a row. In 2019 they won the Intermediate All-Ireland final but with the rule stating that they need to win two All-Irelands to be promoted to senior grade they are contesting the Munster intermediate grade once again. Only 3 weeks ago they contested the delayed 2020 All-Ireland final against St Rynaghs of Offaly who they bet in the 2019 final. This time it was the Offaly side who won on a scoreline of 1-11 to 10 points. This meant that Gaultier along with Fr O’Neills of Cork and Kickhams would be fighting it out for Munster glory. The Tipp champions were drawn to progress to go straight into the final while Gaultier had only a 1 week turn round to play their semi-final after the disappointment of losing the All-Ireland final. At half time they led by 4 points but then pulled away in the final quarter to record a 1-16 to 1-05 win. It’s no doubt Gaultier are a serious outfit and with their experience and track record will go into Saturdays final as favourites. Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams have shown in recent years in Tipperary that they are a club on the rise with promotion up through the junior ranks to winning an intermediate county title this year. They have a great spine of their team with keeper Shenna Ryan, full back Megan McCormack and centre back Beth Ryan. The midfield partnership of Caoimhe McCarthy and Niamh Slattery is one of the best in the county while Ereen Fryday and Eimear Heffernan are two senior county players in attack.  Gaultier have a top class goalkeeper in Ciara Jackman while up front Aoife and Annie Fitzgerald are key forwards. Its been a long road for Gaultier who have had little in a way of an off season in recent years. They have certainly built up lots of experience playing outside of the county. Knockavilla will look to counteract this on Saturday with their hunger, freshness and determination. They have the players to win on Saturday and if they can get the best out of them all then a Munster title could be heading back to the premier.
