FBD Senior Camogie Club Championships

Drom-Inch 3-19

Thurles Sarsfields  0-09

Drom-Inch recorded a massive 19 point victory over Thurles Sarsfields in the final round of group games in this year’s FBD Insurance senior championship. Drom-Inch raced into an early lead and led 1-04 to a point at the waterbreak. All of Drom-Inch’s opening scores coming from play with Joanne Ryan scoring the first of her 3 goals while Siobhan McGrath, Anne Eviston (2) and Michelle Woodlock all raised white flags. Thurles’s opening score came from a Roisin Corbett free. Thurles Sarsfields enjoyed plenty of possession in the second quarter with Sarah McEvitt looking very lively in attack and Emma Carey, Aoife Butler and Karen Kennedy also to the fore. But for all of their hard work and play the scores didn’t materialise and by half time they had only mustered a second Roisin Corbett pointed free.  This was a result of some below par performances up front but also down to some excellent defending by the Drom-Inch back 6. With Mairead Eviston on the sideline returning from injury Eimear McGrath was deployed at midfield while Niamh Long started at number 5 where she looked very at home. On the opposite wing Niamh Treacy’s huge clearances meant lots of supply for the Drom-Inch attack which eventually resulted in a second well-taken goal by Joanne Ryan. The Drom-Inch forwards were looking a lot more dangerous than they had ben in the previous week’s defeat to Annacarty and a superb crossfield clearance by Eimear McGrath late in the opening half found Dee Dunne. She struck a lovely pass to Michelle Woodlock who fired over a point from close to the sideline for the score of the first half. At the interval Drom-Inch were in a very commanding position leading Thurles Sarsfields  2-07 to 0-02. Thurles Sarsfields were unlucky not to have further scores on the board but for the heorics of Caoimhe Bourke in the Drom-Inch goal who pulled off 2 excellent saves in the first half.

The home side continued to dominate in the second half with a pointed free from Eimear McGrath followed by a third Joanne Ryan goal. Minutes later Drom-Inch had won a penalty and Eimear McGrath’s strike flew over the crossbar. Rosin Corbett then pointed 2 frees in succession for Thurles who now had Karen Kennedy operating at centre-forward. Aoife Dwyer scored Thurles Sarsfields first point from play but this was quickly cancelled out by a Miriam Campion point from play. Miriam followed this score up with a further score as she began to exert her influence on the game. Karen Kennedy brought some needed power into the Thurles Sarsfields attack but she also got little space from her marker, the ever reliant Aoife McGrath at centre back. Karen did pick out Anna Derby with a very good pass after the water break and she pointed for the ‘blues’. Both sides exchanged points in the remaining minutes with Sarah Stakelum and Aisling Dwyer getting on the scoreboard for Thurles. But as was the case throughout the hour the Drom-Inch scores came that bit easier while Thurles Sarsfields found the opposition defence very hard to break down. In the end although the final winning margin didn’t reflect the game as a whole Drom-Inch were still convincing winners on a final scoreline of 3-19 to 9 points.

FBD Junior A Championship

Drom-Inch 3-16

Kiladangan 2-14

In a very lively FBD Junior A championship encounter Drom-Inch and Kiladangan produced a high scoring free flowing game of camogie in Drom Village on Sunday morning. Drom-Inch have built some early momentum in this championship to date with two wins now in successive weeks away to Holycross and at home to Kiladangan. For a Kiladangan it was their second defeat from their opening 3 games with a loss to Templemore in the first round and a win against St Rita’s Fethard last weekend. There was very little between the sides throughout the hour but Drom’s greater spread of scorers the difference on the day. Sinead Meagher was in flying form for the visitors and a real leader in attack finishing with an impressive individual tally of 1-10. She was well assisted throughout the hour by Paula Kelly who was excellent in midfield. For Drom-Inch Eimear Shananhan’s two first half goals were crucial while Kate Fogarty at corner forward was a constant threat for the Kiladangan defence. Noirn Kirwan and Aine Greed were also influential throughout the hour as was Caroline Shanahan and Niamh Ryan. Kiladdnagan dominated at different stages of the game but could never push ahead of Drom. In the end Drom-Inch looked to be the better balanced team and succeeded in winning on a final score of 3-16 to 2-14.
