FBD Insurance Senior Championships

Annacarty 3-09 Drom-Inch 2-10

Group 1 of the FBD Insurance Senior championship was thrown right open on Saturday when current county champions Drom-Inch were defeated by Annacarty who were deserving 2 point winners in Annacarty. Drom started brightly with an early goal from Michelle Woodlock to give them the lead 1-03 to 2 points at the waterbreak. By half time though Annacarty had stormed into the lead and led by 2 points 1-6 to 1-4. Eibhlis McDonald was very effective for the home side. She started full forward but roamed about which pulled the Dom-Inch backs out of shape. The Drom-Inch defence were also feeling the loss of Mairead Eviston who was absent through injury. At the other end Annacartys defence was very good led by Rosanna O’Donnell at full back who has really grown into the position and Cinnait Walsh and Karen Fox in the half backline. Gemma Fox was also very good in midfield with 2 points. The Drom-Inch attack struggled to click and finished with only 5 scores from play 1-2 from Eimear McGrath, Michelle Woodlock with a goal and a second half point from Dee Dunne. They were reliant on Eimear McGath’s well executed frees to keep the score board ticking as she finished with 7 points from frees in total. A second goal from Annacarty in the second half stretched their lead but Drom had a chance to get back level when Eimear McGrath stepped up to take a penalty. Her shot however was saved by Aoife Butler in the Annacarty goal. At the second half waterbreak Drom trailed by the slightest of margins 1-8 to 2-6. Soon after the sides were level but Annacarty showed great resolve and fighting spirit with a third goal to push them ahead. In an exciting finale both sides showed great determination to win and a well taken goal by Eimear McGath made it a 1 point game once again. But it was Annacarty who got the final score and they held on for a 2 point win 3-09 to 2-10. Annacarty’s 3 goals in total one from Ciara Slattery and 2 from Eva O’Dwyer proved crucial coming at key stages and were vita in preventing Drom to build any kind of momentum. Annacarty were fully deserving of their win as they out fought and out muscled Drom in key areas of the pitch and had a great spread of scorers. For Drom-Inch they will be disappointed that only 3 of their 6 forwards scored and in total only 2-3 was scored from play. Best for Drom was Niamh Treacy at wing back who gave a fine performance and steadied the team further when switched into centre back for the second half. Annacarty currently lie top of the group with all 4 of their games played. Drom-Inch face Thurles Sarsfields this Saturday in both teams final group game with what should be a highly entertaining encounter as both teams look to head for the knockout stages on back of a good performance and a victory.

Annacarty: Aoife Butler, Ellen Gantley, Rosanna ODonnell, Sarah Burke, Ciannait Walsh, Karen Fox, Orlagh Walsh, Gemma Fox(0-2), Orla O’Brien, Jean Kelly, Siobhan O’Neill (0-4), Rachel O’Dwyer(0-1), Eva O’Dwyer (2-01), Eibhlis McDonald (0-1), Leah Heffernan, Subs used: Ciara Slattey(1-0), Laura Heffernan, Cora Heffernan.

Thurles Sarsfields 4-19 Toomevara 4-03

Thurles Sarsfields made it 2 wins from 3 in the FBD Insurance Senior Championship after a 16 point win over Toomevara. Thurles set the tempo early with the first score of the game a goal from Sarah Stakelum who impressed throughout and finished with a goal and 2 points from play. By the first waterbreak they led 1-06 to no score. Huge credit must go to Toomevara who could have easily thrown in the towel at that stage but instead brought a great intensity to their play in the second quarter scoring 3 goals and a point. Toomevara were all of a sudden on top in every position and outworked and out played Thurles creating 3 goals. Thurles Sarsfields also had 2 goals of their own in that period one from Nicola Loughnane and the other a wonder goal from Karen Kennedy who made a blistering solo run from midfield before burying her shot to the top corner. At half time Thurles led 3-09 to 3-01. In the second half Thurles Sarsfields settled again and dominated the scoring outscoring the visitors 1-10 to 1-02. Again Toomevaras attitude and work rate was impressive fighting right to the end for every ball and responding to Nicola Loughnane’s late goal with a goal of their own. All 3 of Toome’s points came from Gemma McCarthy while Mickayla Doran, Eileen Gleeson, Ciara Kenneally and Gemma McCarthy all raised a green flag each. Elsewhere for Toomevara Shauna Quirke was very good in the half backline but Thurles always had too much fire power up front. Sisters Aoife and Ashling Dwyer who both lined out at wing forward finished with 5 points from play between them while Nicola Loughnane topped off a great individual display with two excellent points from way out on the wing late in the second half. Ciara Cummins and Karen Kennedy formed a brilliant partnership in midfield and were the launching pad for many of the Sars scores. They also welcomed the return of Roisin Corbett from injury who scored a point and was also instrumental in setting up a score. All in all Thurles Sarsfields will be happy with another win. 4-19 was very impressive scoring but equally they will be disappointed with conceding 4 goals. Next up

for them is a short trip to the Ragg to take on Drom-Inch in the final group game this Saturday.

Burgess-Duharra 1-15  Nenagh 1-04

Burgess-Duharra proved much too strong for Nenagh in Kilcolman on Saturday. In a one sided affair the home side led 1-7 to 1 point at half time the goal coming from Emily Morrissey. Things didn’t get any easier for Nenagh in the second half as Burgess-Duharra continued to dominate and score at ease to open up a big winning margin. At the second half waterbreak they led 1-12 to 3 points. A goal from a Grace O’Bien free right at the end meant the final score read 1-15 to 1-04. Grace O’Brien looked the most threatening for Nenagh but it was a case of job done for Burgess-Duharra who dominated every area of the field. Caoimhe and Ciardha Maher were both impressive as was Jenny and Katie Grace.

Cashel 1-13 Silvermines 1-8

Silvermines played with a strong wind in first half and were rewarded  with an early Nicola Butler goal. The sides were level after 7 minutes at Cashel 0-03 Silvermines 1-00 but Silvermines then took control to lead at halftime after five Brid Quinn points in a row; Silvermines 1-07 Cashel were 4 points.

Points from play from Karin Blair and several long range second half frees brought Cashel were a feature of the game. The sides were level 15 minutes into the second half after another Brid Quinn point for Silvermines. An inspirational point from Amy Crosse after a solo from half back helped Cashel’s revival. Cashel corner forward Aine o Dwyer was moved out as 3rd midfielder to good effect and Grace Moloney started a 1-2 move to finish a goal to the Silvermines net.

Silvermines: Aisling Carey, Anna Stapleton, Nessa Murray, Miriam Murphy, Emer Touhy, Louise McLoughlin, Eimear Murphy, Ciara Ryan, Aine Touhy, Brid Quinn, Sarah Madden, Nicola Butler, Ellen Cuneen, Sarah Cuneen, Niamh Cuneen, Elaine Murphy, Ciara Grace.

FBD Insurance Intermediate Championship Round-up

Knockavilla 0-12 Cahir 0-06

Knockavilla have made it 3 wins out of 3 after a low scoring game in Dundrum on Saturday Oct 2nd. Emer Heffernan’s scores from play and placed balls were the difference as Knockavilla were never really threatened in this game after they surged into a 0-06 to 0-01 first water break lead. Roisin Howard was very influential in the middle for Cahir but Knockavilla were able to introduce County Senior Ereena Fryday, who is nursing a knee injury, at halftime.

Played in Cloughjordan, This game was a first half goal-fest with the halftime score of Kilruane 4-04 to Newport’s 2-04 with Kilruane’s Marie Ryan getting their first goal after a Laura Shinners sideline cut. A goal each during the 3rd quarter kept this match in the melting pot and even a Kilruane red card after 58 minutes did not prevent Kilruane recording their first win by a 10 point margin at fulltime.

Fantastic FESTIVAL OF CAMOGIE!

All roads led to Thurles on Sunday for the festival of camogie . From early morning the cars flooded into Dr Morris Park from all corners of Tipperary, with excited young girls in every one . They came in their club colours with banners and bunting which was a sight to behold . The Under 8 girls were first up , 44 teams in total marched in the parade behind piper Gerry Neville exuding excitement and pride .

Then the battles began, all clubs played 3 three games , where we had magnificent skill on offer throughout. We repeated this in the afternoon with all the u10 girls, 40 teams attended.

Lots of photo opportunities were had throughout the day and are available to view on our Facebook page. We has Tipp stars Grace O Brien from Nenagh and Julianne Burke from Borrisoleigh who came along to lend support and to take time to stand for numerous photos with all the young fans.

There really was a festival atmosphere in Dr Morris Park all day Sunday . Thanks to the great work of Tipperary Development group for organising such a wonderful event for these you girls , the future of Tipp camogie is in good hands with all the talent that was on display and it was certainly a day where memories were made and new friendships were forged.
